In 5 years, Mumbai region reports 26% animal bites; rabies deaths rise 3-fold in Maharashtra

Rabies, a vaccine-preventable viral disease, is spreading globally. WHO estimates that it kills 55,000 people annually, including 20,000 in India. In 2023, Maharashtra saw 30 rabies deaths, compared to 10 in 2019. Mumbai Metropolitan Region accounted for 26% of animal bites in the state. The city has the highest number of cases in MMR.
