NGT notice to MoD, DDA & forest department over tree felling

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a notice to the secretary of the Ministry of Defence, the principal chief conservator of forests, and the vice-chairman of the Delhi Development Authority, following a Times of India (TOI) report on tree cutting on the Central Ridge. The forest department claimed that the tree cutting, involving 8.7 hectares, violated environmental norms and acts such as the Delhi Preservation of Tree Act 1994, Forest Conservation Act 1980, and Indian Forest Act 1927. The NGT took cognizance of the TOI report, stating it discloses a substantial issue regarding environmental compliance. The forest department had earlier issued a notice to the Quarter Master General of the Army Headquarters, directing a report on the alleged offense. The NGT's notice underscores the significance of adhering to environmental regulations in the matter. The Army, in response, stated that it is investigating the reported violation and will take necessary action in accordance with existing policies and procedures.
