Maharashtra: 1,809 farmers died by suicide in 8 months, down 7% from last year

Between January and August this year, Maharashtra reported 1,809 farmer suicides, with an average of 7 suicides per day. This is a 7% decrease compared to the same period last year. However, the arid region of Marathwada recorded a higher number of cases compared to last year. Of the total cases, 50% were from the cotton belt of Vidarbha. Only 51% of the cases were eligible for government compensation, with payment completed in 89% of those cases. While cash crops like cotton and soybean have helped mitigate distress, the rain deficit in the state remains a concern.
