Mumbai Railways crime detection rate up to 40% in Jan-Aug '23

The detection rate of crimes on Mumbai Railways has increased from 15% in pre-Covid times to 40% this year. Overall crimes reported in the first eight months of this year have increased by 16% compared to the same period in 2022. The use of facial recognition systems, along with traditional policing methods, has helped solve crimes faster and more accurately. The system works by matching faces to a watch list. Theft cases accounted for the majority of crimes, with a detection rate of 38%. However, the detection rate for robbery offenses has decreased. The government is also considering mounting cameras on the front exterior of trains to gather evidence in track death cases.
