This fiscal year has thrown up unusual trends as currency leakage — measured through the increase in currency in circulation — plunged for five months starting May due to the return of the Rs 2,000 banknotes to the financial system. Since October, however, the trend has reversed sharply enough for the pace of currency leakage to match that of the previous year.
