The ancient Persian city of Yazd has developed engineering marvels, such as wind catchers known as badgirs, to stay cool in summer temperatures that exceed 40C without air conditioners. The oldest of the city's 700 wind catchers dates back to the 14th century, but the architectural feature, which is totally free of cost and carbon emissions, is believed to be 2,500 years old.
