India needs to put in place a multi-hazard early warning system (EWS) with a focus on floods to mitigate the damage caused by excess monsoon rains resulting in floods. An EWS could have saved many lives and reduced flood damage by up to 30%. Unfortunately, only a quarter of the 72% of districts exposed to extreme flood events have level flood-forecasting stations, meaning only one in three Indians exposed to extreme floods has flood EWS coverage.
