Tea towels can harbour a diverse variety of germs picked up from human hands, pets or food waste, leading to a higher proportion of foodborne infections being acquired at home. In a study of tea towels that wiped down chopping boards used for salmonella-contaminated chicken, 90% of the cloths became infected with the bacteria.
