India's first underwater metro is expected to be operational by the end of 2023, connecting Howrah Maidan to Mahakaran metro station in Kolkata. The 16.55 km project features tunnels under the heavily built-up areas of Kolkata, including a record-breaking tunnel beneath the river Hooghly, 33 metres below ground level and running 32 metres below water level.
