Former US President Donald Trump in 2019 authorised the CIA* to launch a secret smear campaign against China, Reuters reported. Trump had ordered a clandestine campaign on Chinese social media aimed at turning public opinion in China against its government, according to former US officials.The CIA is said to have created a small team of operatives who used bogus internet identities to smear Xi Jinping’s government. The CIA operatives also leaked disparaging intelligence to overseas news outlets as part of the 2019 mission, Reuters wrote.
