Israel Knesset Rejects Military Bill To Conscript Ultra-Orthodox After UTJ Claims “Manpower Surplus”

The post-October 7 situation in Israel has stirred a debate in Tel Aviv over the need for mass mobilisation in the country. Deputy Knesset Speaker Moshe Roth, a member of the Haredi United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party has threatened to bolt the coalition. Roth’s statement comes in contradiction to Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, who recently said that “the army is in need of manpower now”. Meanwhile, the United Torah Judaism party announced that the Jewish nation has “no right to exist” in Israel without full-time Torah scholars.
