Putin Revamps Military Command, Special Forces As NATO Expands With New Members Finland and Sweden

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree reorganising the country's military structure. Russia said the move reinstates the long-dormant Moscow and Leningrad military districts to meet new challenges. Russia has also incorporated the four occupied Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia into the Southern Military District. The decision to re-establish the Moscow and Leningrad districts was initially proposed by Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu in Dec. 2022.
