US senator to TikTok CEO: "Any ties to the Chinese Communist Party?"

At a US Senate hearing, where US senators grilled social media CEOs on child sexual exploitation, U.S. Senator Tom Cotton repeatedly asked TikTok's Singaporean chief Shou Zi Chew about his ties with China and if he had ever belonged to the Chinese Communist Party."Have you ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party?" Hawley asked Chew who responded, "Senator, I'm Singaporean. No."Hawley then asked, "Have you ever been associated or affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party?" to which Chew responded, "No, senator. Again, I'm Singaporean."Wednesday was the first appearance by TikTok CEO Chew before U.S. lawmakers since March, when the Chinese-owned short video app company faced harsh questions, including some suggesting the app was damaging children's mental health and that user data could be passed on to China's government.Chew disclosed more than 170 million Americans used TikTok monthly, 20 million more than the company said last year.
