Biggest Funder US Halts UNRWA Money, Israel Fumes After Shin Bet Links UNRWA Workers To Oct.7 Attack

The US has temporarily paused funding for UNRWA after allegations that 12 employees may have been involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel. “There must be complete accountability for anyone who participated in the heinous attacks of October 7,” a US state department spokesperson said.A representative for the UN chief said Guterres was “horrified” by the news and confirmed that the contracts of the concerned staff had been terminated. UNRWA Chief Philippe Lazzarini said that Israeli authorities had provided information about the staff members’ alleged involvement. Lazzarini did not disclose the number of employees allegedly involved in the attacks, nor the nature of their alleged involvement. He said, however, that “any UNRWA employee who was involved in acts of terror” would be held accountable.A senior Israeli official told Axios that the Shin Bet and the IDF provided information that pointed to active participation of UNRWA staffers. The Israeli official said UNRWA vehicles and facilities were used by Hamas to facilitate the Oct. 7 attack.
