A Honduran journalist, Francisco Ramirez, was shot to death in Danli despite police protection. The police commissioner initially blamed a personal vendetta, but it was later revealed that the assassination order came from inside a Honduran prison. Ramirez's murder is linked to his work as a journalist, as he had previously suffered an attack for his coverage and investigation of criminal activities. Honduras has a high number of journalist killings, with over 100 journalists killed since 2001.
