Hunger is soaring and spreading across West Africa, says UN

Around 48 million people are facing food insecurity in West Africa, a 10-year high due to violence and the economic and inflationary impact of Covid-19, the UN has warned. Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, northern Nigeria and Mauritania have been the worst-affected countries. In the Sahel region, 45,000 are at risk of starvation, with 42,000 in Burkina Faso. The populations of Benin and Togo also are facing food crises due to fleeing civilians and militants.
