The Bombay High Court has directed the commissioner of police to deploy additional security personnel to ensure the safety of a bridge in Palghar district, which is at risk due to illegal sand excavation. The court expressed concern not only for the ecological damage but also for the safety of the railway bridge that carries over 20 lakh passengers daily. The court's order came in response to a PIL filed by the Awaaz Foundation, which highlighted the large-scale illegal excavation of sand near Julie Island. The court warned that failure to comply with its orders could result in contempt proceedings.
