IISc’s AI tool can aid in screening for nerve disorder

Researchers from IISc and Aster-CMI Hospital have developed an AI tool that can detect carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) by identifying the median nerve in ultrasound videos. The tool uses a machine learning model based on transformer architecture to segment the nerve in individual frames of the video and measure its cross-sectional area. The model achieved over 95% accuracy in measuring the nerve's cross-sectional area at the wrist region. The researchers plan to extend the tool to other nerves in the upper and lower limbs and are looking for ultrasound machine manufacturers to integrate it into their systems.
