A recent community-led survey conducted by members of nomadic and denotified tribes (NT-DNT) in Maharashtra reveals the challenges faced by these communities in accessing toilets. Despite the presence of toilets near their settlements, 80% of NT-DNT community members are forced to resort to open defecation due to their criminalized, nomadic, and landless status. The survey highlights the need for attention to be given to these marginalized communities and their access to basic sanitation facilities. The issue of toilets is closely linked to power and land, and these communities face stigma and harassment when trying to access public toilets at night.
