Thanjavur: 'One stop crisis team' to tackle human trafficking

THANJAVUR: A district-level 'One stop crisis team' has been constituted on Wednesday to render legal services effectively in preventing and addressing human trafficking issues across the district.

The team formed under the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) scheme has nine members including P. Sudha, secretary, Sub-judge, district legal services authority, N. Sakthivel, district revenue officer, and others.

The team can inspect worksites periodically, if they come across any victims of human trafficking. They will approach the relevant authorities and work to get them released, in the appropriate official manner. The team can map out the vulnerable areas and the vulnerable population and conduct awareness in the communjity about the issue of human trafficking. The team can plan preventive strategies which include spreading awareness about relevant laws and dangers posed by prospective traffickers. The team can also organise camps at the taluk-level to ensure that government and rehabilitation schemes reach the victims.

The 'One stop crisis team' was launched at the workshop on human trafficking organised by the district legal services authority in association with International Justice Mission and SHED India.

Inaugurating the workshop, Thanjavur collector A. Annadurai, assured all co-operation from the district administration to prevent human trafficking.

Principal district judge and chairman of district legal services authority V. Sivagnhanam, called for eradication of poverty to prevent crimes and creation of awareness to prevent human trafficking.

First additional district judge K. Karunanithi, Sessions judge, Mahalir Needhimandram, M. Ezhilarasi, Superintendent of police, Thanjavur district, S. S. Maheswaran, also spoke.
