Kochi: Drive to bring migrants under Awaz Assurance

KOCHI: The labour department will begin a month-long drive to enrol all rema-ining migrant labourers in the Awaz Assurance across the state on Tuesday.

Kerala launched the first-of-its-kind insurance scheme two years back for an accident claim of Rs 2 lakh and treatment aid up to Rs 15,000 for all migrant labourers between the age of 18 and 60.

Already four lakh migrant labourers have been included in the scheme. One of its aims includes identifying the exact number of migrant labourers in the state.

As part of the scheme, all registered labourers will be given free treatment through government hospitals on the lines of the Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CHIS) Plus. Altogether 56 government hospitals, including medical college hospitals and RCC, are enlisted.

District labour offices in 11 districts are ready to launch the campaign from Tuesday while in Idukki, Wayanad and Kasargod a special scheme will be devised for the same. A top-level team of the department led by labour commissioner C. V. Sajan is controlling its implementation.

Two mobile units are ready in Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode districts for the enrollment drive.

There will be fixed units in major centres in the districts. In the Kozhikode region, regi-onal joint labour commissioner K. M. Sunil leads the drive in areas under Kozhikode, Kan-nur and Malappuram district labour offices.

In the Ernakulam region, it is led by regional joint labour commissioner K. Sreelal and is conducted in areas under Thrissur, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Palakkad district labour offices.

Under Kollam region regional joint labour commissioner R. Sankar leads the drive in areas under Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Thiruvanant-hapuram and Alappu-zha district labour offices.
