Sohla El-Waylly is back on YouTube.
El-Waylly left the video side of the Bon Appétit Test Kitchen in August, alleging rampant pay disparity and mistreatment of people of color who appeared in videos for the once-popular YouTube channel. Just about a month later, El-Waylly has her own show. It's done in conjunction with Andrew Rea, the person behind the super popular YouTube show Binging With Babish. The channel, which boasts over 7.8 million subscribers, is now called the Babish Culinary Universe.
The conceit of the show, dubbed Stump Sohla, is basically...trying to stump El-Waylly. In each episode she spins a wheel that adds a challenge to cooking a type of food. In the debut episode, El-Waylly had to make mac and cheese with just 18th century cooking tools. It's super entertaining to watch her struggle with an open flame, imperfect flour, and janky tools and still make something delicious.
