Medical education regulator defers decision on MBBS seat cap

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has postponed its decision to limit the number of MBBS seats to 100 per 10 lakh population for a year due to protests from southern states. The Union Health Ministry had asked the NMC to re-evaluate the ratio, leading to the decision to implement it from the academic year 2025-26. The NMC's initial decision, announced in August, had been met with opposition from states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Puducherry, which have a significant number of medical colleges.
