State-run general insurers have been asked by the government to focus on cutting losses and improving operational efficiency to mirror the turnaround success of public sector banks. Capital infusion will not be provided just to stem losses, and the government wants insurers to make changes to their strategies to improve their market share that continues to decline compared with private sector players.
