View: India should try lentil crops

Australian and Brazilian farmers are experimenting with crops such as arhar, urad and tur daal as they look to target the staple Indian diets for which domestic production is inadequate. Lentil prices in India are subject to volatility due to the country's dependence on imports from eastern Africa and Myanmar. India consumes over 50% of the world’s lentil production and hopes to widen its own supply base to limit price demands.
