Nu Yawk is famous for its iconic street-side snack, the haat dawg, which is not, as the name suggests, a canine-based comestible but a frankfurter sausage encased in a soft bun, garnished with mustard, ketchup, fried onions, and sauerkraut. The hot dog is the object of a form of gladiatorial combat called Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, which is held annually on New York's Coney Island on July 4, America's Independence Day.
