The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has made it mandatory for all cough syrup exporters to have their product tested and certified for quality at specified government laboratories before shipping out export orders. This is welcome. It will begin to repair the reputational damage over alleged Indian cough syrup-related deaths in some countries last year. Safeguarding quality cannot be limited to some products or to exports.
