Pumped storage hydro projects get freedom from green scrutiny

India’s Ministry of Environment has approved an exemption of pumped storage hydropower (PSHP) projects from environmental impact assessments due to their role in the country’s energy storage and infrastructure development needs. PSHP entails two reservoirs placed at differing elevations and is considered efficient and comparable to a “giant battery”, as it can store and release power.
