​​In 1994, the court found Mohan guilty of leading a mob and lynching Gopalganj district magistrate G Krishnaiah. Mohan subsequently facilitated his wife from jail, to stand for elections as a Congress and SP candidate in the 2010 assembly and 2014 Lok Sabha elections, respectively. As a Tomar Rajput, Mohan apparently serves an electoral function for Kumar, who is desperately looking to expand his vote base after snapping his party's ties with BJP last year.
