An improved rail system - new lines, augmenting existing lines, improved railway stations, faster trains and integration with other modes - is critical in this regard. Better rail services, which includes speed, ease of access, safety and reliability, will get people off the roads and even planes into trains, reducing the carbon intensity of travel. Investment in dedicated freight corridors will have a similar impact on goods movement - away from roads on to tracks. The railways targets increasing its share of freight traffic to 45% by 2030.
