THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: About one acre land at Vallakadavu, adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram International airport, that had been a garbage dumpyard and hub for anti-social activities has been converted into a Green Park comprising walkway, children’s park, aerobic bins and e-toilets. The Airports Authority of India has made the initiative as part of its efforts to address the bird hit menace due to unscientific garbage disposal.
The Rs 55 lakh project was initiated as part of the corporate social responsibility activity of AAI. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who formally opened the Green Park on Thursday, urged local people to make use of facilities like the aerobic bin to avoid bird menace as well as to ensure that the Green Park was well maintained. Airport director George Tharakan handed over the key of the park to the corporation Mayor V.K. Prasanth as the corporation would be maintaining the Green Park and aerobic bins. Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor and V.S. Sivakumar, MLA, also attended.
