Declare Tamil Nadu drought-hit: Congress

Chennai: With drinking water crisis assuming alarming proportions by the day, forcing the people to wait for days in certain pockets to get their regular replenishments, the Congress party here has demanded the government to declare Tamil Nadu as drought-hit.

Lashing out at the State government for doing precious little to safeguard the people against the impending water crisis, TNCC president K. S. Alagiri said instead of involving in preparatory work and devising ways and means to mitigate the conditions of the people, the State government has been blaming the monsoon.

Congress ally, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan also accused the State government of not taking proper steps to resolve the water crisis. “Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi today but I don’t know whether he has discussed the water crisis issue with him,” he said on Saturday and urged both State and Central governments to solve the issue. “I request the Prime Minister to allocate sufficient funds to solve the water crisis issue in Tamil Nadu,” he added.

Earlier this week, the DMK had slammed the AIADMK government for its “inability” to solve the water crisis.

Meanwhile, demanding the State government to come out with a white paper on its programme to desilt lakes and other water bodies across Tamil Nadu, AMMK leader T. T. V. Dhinakaran said the government should also explain the extent of funds received from the Centre for drought mitigation works and list out the schemes district-wise.
