Hyderabad: 2 firms fined for unfair practices

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Consumer Information Centre has fined Shoppers Stop, Begumpet, Rs 7,000 and Kalyan Jewellers Rs 30,000 in two separate cases on Saturday.

Shoppers Stop was penalised for charging a customer for a plastic carry bag which has a company logo on it. The consumer, Mr Srikanth, had filed a complaint after the outlet charged him Rs 5 for a plastic cover that bore the logo of Shoppers Stop.

According to a recent judgment by the Chandi-garh State Consumers Forum, no establishment can charge for a plastic carry bag if its logo is printed on the cover. The customer is not supposed to pay for the publicity of the establishment, the forum had stated.

However, some companies have taken the stand that the plastic cover is also a ‘product’ and that they are selling it for a price

In a separate case, Kalyan Jewellers was fined Rs 30,000, as it did not include the details of value added (VA) in the bill in a manner that the customer can understand.

According to the details of the case, the consumer, Mr Srinayya of Ramanthapur, had taken membership in the gold scheme being run by the jewellery store from May 2018. He was supposed to get gold worth Rs 1,10,000 by April 3 this year, as he had paid `10,000 every month for 11 months.

However, he alleged, Kalyan Jewellers gave Rs 1,04,000 without stating how much percentage had been cut down as wastage charges for the VA.

As per the terms of Kalyan Jewellers, if the wastage charge is below 20 per cent they won’t be charged anything. If the wastage charge is more than 20 per cent, the company would bear 75 per cent of it. These details were not mentioned in the bill, Mr Srinyya alleged, and the customer was given bill for Rs 1,04,000.
